L'Eroica
For anyone headed to Europe, plan to be in the beautiful Italian Tuscan village of Gaioli on Saturday, October 1 for the spectacle that is L'Eroica. Italian for "The Heros," the event celebrates the bygone days of cycling with vintage steel frames, wool jerseys and "strada blanca" - the white dirt roads that wind through the region. Riders all use gear that dates pre-1970, donning the appropriate, clothing and shoes as they tackle the 200+ kilometer route.
While this year's event is filled, it's a privilege to just be a spectator to the beauty of this two-wheeled celebration. Phil and I were at L'Eroica a few years ago and saw riders young and old tackling the event. My favorite rider was a charming 80 year old who loved my Sprockets jersey. Despite his age and having ridden 200k, he was unabashedly flirting. (The Italians are so charming) For anyone who loves bicycles, the equipment and displays are like fine art.
And the course is well marked so once L'Eroica is over, you can ride your own bike on the route. Whether you do the full 200k or just ramble a few miles from charming town to charming town, it's a magnificent taste of Tuscany. While a road bike is appropriate, you'll want a bit wider tire than you usually ride on the road. I used a 700x28 and did fine.
