Pledge to ride now!

By clicking on the "Go By Bike" link on the left,  you can pledge to ride your bike. No matter how many miles you choose to do, it all makes a difference. And you'll be entered in a drawing to win a new Trek hybrid. Have fun, get some exercise, save some money and save the world. All that with just two wheels!

Fun Facts!

On average each mile you bike instead of drive reduces 1lb of CO2.

95 percent of a cars' energy goes toward moving the car itself. Only 5 percent is used to move the passenger. In contrast, 83 percent  of the energy on a bicycle goes toward transporting the rider - only 17 percent of the energy is needed to move the vehicle.

Using a bicycle to commute four days a week for four miles each way saves saves 83.2 gallons of gas compared to a car which gets 20mpg.

The average gas price in Santa Cruz is $4.15.  Your 83.2 gallons of gas costs $345.28. For $370 you can buy a new bike.

The current population of Santa Cruz County is about 256,000 people. If we all rode our bikes  four days a week we would together save more than 21 million gallons of gas which adds up to more than 75 million dollars and 420 million pounds of C02!

Six Great Ways to Get Involved

  1. Ride your bike, especially for trips under two miles. Why? The emission controls on your car are not operating effectively in the first few minutes thus short trips create more pollution.
  2. Get your kids to ride. In 1964 50% of kids rode to school and the obesity rate was 12%…in 2004, 3% rode to school and the obesity rate was 45%. To learn more, check out www.saferoutestoschools.org.
  3. Get your friends to ride their bikes. Challenge them to find out where they can pedal within two miles of their house, then encourage them to take a bike for short trips.
  4. Contact your state bicycle advocacy group and support their efforts.
  5. Like to ride mountain bikes? Join the IMBA and support their efforts to open new trails and maintain existing trails.
  6. Keep updated on important issues and events. Sign up for 1world2wheels.org.
